Mercato delle Gaite in Bevagna - Medieval Festival
The Exhibition Market of the Gaite takes its inspiration from a division of Bevagna in four districts named Gaite which was based on the 'administrative organization of the city in medieval times
The purpose of the event is to reconstruct the historical and greater relevance in great detail the daily life of the inhabitants of Bevagna in the period between 1250 and 1350
To this end, since 1983 a group of scholars examines carefully the Statute of the municipality of Bevagna century from which it derives the necessary information to the historical reconstruction of political, administrative, economic and social development.
For ten days, then at the end of June Bevagna is a dip in this remote past: the ancient medieval crafts shops reopened their doors and take over the assets and the streets are filled with Bevan in vintage clothes live everyday life of their ancestors by eating, working, playing just like them.
Then as now the city is divided into four gaite, but now competes with each other in an attempt to give a historically faithful interpretation of the role it plays in the Middle Ages. The spirit of competition is the basis of the animated show takes the form of participation in four competition: competition in the market, competition of culinary contest crafts, sports competitions of archery. With a complex points system, given by experienced teachers in different fields and asked to judge the relevance of history, the last day of the event, the winner receives a gift the prize of victory. The strong sense of belonging to the gaita makes competition very interesting and stimulating continuous improvement of the proposals of the Gaite in the various sectors with a clear advantage of the overall quality of the event
Market of the Gaite is now counted among the most important historical events in Umbria and part of the Regional Association of Historical Events.
I Crafts
Gaite The challenge each other, with strong and healthy spirit of competition in the revival of ancient crafts of the city (strictly based on techniques and tools of the medieval).
This is testified by the extraordinary laboratories where the muffled sound of handlooms merges with the singing of women in the work of the mysterious caverns where herbalists huge stills drop the precious drops of liquid from herbs carefully blended; ovens picturesque with the scent of freshly baked bread, smoky and dimly lit caves where, like ghosts, the workers produce tallow and wax, real blacksmiths, locksmiths in other time, the rhythmic beat of the hammer on the anvil, hot iron to bend the will of their fantasy of gigantic machines that reduce the paper to pulp rags to make paper filigree, silkworms, wisely kept to the production of fine wire, the glassmakers that shape the glass with skillful craft.
